Congress has overwhelmingly approved the Veterans Medicine Mobility Act and sent it to President Obama.
Iowa Veterinary Medicine Association Executive Director Dr. Randy Wheeler says the measure allows Vets to carry controlled substances out of their clinics in order to treat sick or dying animals and not be subject arrest for doing their job.

Wheeler says interpretation of a prior rule, the Controlled Substances Act made it difficult if not impossible for Vets to carry drugs and go out in the field to do their jobs.

Wheeler says the Veterans Medicine Mobility Act not only helps Vets be able to carry out routine duties it also is beneficial for human and animal health.

Backers of the legislation say that expecting ranchers to transport their livestock to veterinary clinics every time medication is needed is an example of overly burdensome policy created by bureaucrats.
