Trade Promotion Authority Opposed by South Dakota Farmers Union

Legislation introduced last week in the Senate to give the President Trade Promotion Authority is facing opposition from a South Dakota farm group. State Farmers Union Legislative Director Matt Sibley says his organization is against giving the President the authority to bypass Congress in order to fast track trade deals.

Sibley says prior trade agreements have not worked very well and that policy needs changing especially those that would push them forward without specific Congressional involvement.

Sibley says just because South Dakota Farmers Union and their National parent group oppose TPA doesn’t mean they’re against trade.  Markup on the Senate TPA bill could happen yet later this week.
