Opponents to the Keystone XL oil pipeline are meeting in Norfolk, Nebraska today at a meeting hosted by the Nebraska Chapter of the Sierra Club. Ken Winston is the legal counsel for the Nebraska Sierra Club as well as BOLD Nebraska. He says there are several reasons they’re opposed to the route for the Keystone project and will be arguing against it at a State Public Service Commission hearing in August in Lincoln.
He says there are many legal concerns over the usage of eminent domain by a foreign company as well as the potential harm to endangered species from the pipeline.
Winston says the major endangered species threatened by the Keystone XL project is the Whooping Crane.
Winston says there will be a public hearing in Lincoln from August 7 through 11 at which those who have given written testimony will have an opportunity to weigh in with the State Public Service Commission. Today’s Norfolk meeting is being held at the Divots conference center.
