Organization for Competitive Markets Executive Director Joe Maxwell says america’s consumers are being misled by where their meat is coming from. Because of that, O-C-M along with the American Grassfed Association has filed a petition with the USDA to change that labeling policy. Maxwell says misbranding of meat products is misleading consumers and resulting in untruthful origin statements from foreign meat companies and that policy must be changed.

He says O-C-M and the Grassfed Association are asking the Food Safety and Inspection Service of USDA to ensure only domestic meat producers can be labeled Product of the USA.

Maxwell says the three major meat companies that are all foreign owned including JBS, Marfrig and Smithfield Foods will oppose their petition so they’re asking consumers to weigh in with FSIS for the need for the policy change.

Maxwell says FSIS will be holding a public comment period on their petition and consumers need to make their views known at that time.
