Mixed Views on Finalizing the Trans Pacific Partnership

U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman expressed optimism recently that negotiators are close to wrapping up a final Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement. Iowa Farm Bureau President Craig Hill says he’s glad the trade leader is positive about progress, but thinks it may be tough to achieve yet this year.

Hill says if the Trans Pacific Partnership runs into 2016, it could get muddled up in Presidential politics. He also says that it’s critical to complete the TPP to make any progress on the Trans Atlantic free trade talks.

The TPP involves the United States and 11 other countries that comprise 40 percent of the global gross domestic product. Three of the remaining sticking points in the TPP discussions include intellectual property rights, automobiles and dairy.
