Legislation to overhaul the Renewable Fuel Standard is being drawn up by Texas Senator John Cronyn. Renewable Fuel Association Senior Vice President Geoff Cooper says the move represents just one of several attempts attacking the ethanol mandate. However, he doesn’t think it will get much traction.
The overhaul legislation calls for creating national octane standards, as well as new supports for cellulosic ethanol. Cooper says that’s nothing but a weak attempt to gain biofuel industry support for a bad idea.
Despite this latest attack on the RFS, Cooper is encouraged with the strong backing by the President, as well as several members of Congress.
Cronyn’s staff has been hosting talks for several months on altering the biofuels program, and pushing forward his reform measure.
