Kansas Senator and Senate Ag Committee member Jerry Moran says wheat is one of the commodities that needs attention in the next farm bill, along with dairy, sorghum and cotton. National Association of Wheat Growers President Gordon Stoner is pleased Moran is focusing on wheat. He says as lawmakers craft the next program it’s important they understand that to get an effective safety net for wheat and all commodities an increase in spending is needed.
He says agriculture contributed $23 billion in funding cuts in the last farm bill and given the recent status of the depressed farm economy is justified in asking for more funding support in the new program.
Stoner says it’s critical that all commodity groups are united with their requests in the next farm bill.
The Senate Ag Committee holds their first farm bill field hearing next week in Manhattan, Kansas.
