A zebra mussel has been discovered on a boat dock in Lewis and Clark Lake in Yankton. Zebra mussels are an invasive species and according to John Lott, chief of aquatic resources for the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks, they can cause a lot of problems.
Although there was only one mussel found after more inspections and water samples, the lake is now classified as ‘suspect’ for contamination and will be further monitored. As for how the mussel got there, Lott says they don’t really know.
Lott says if there are any more mussels found, the lake would move from ‘suspect’ to ‘positive’ classification. He says the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks is working alongside Nebraska Game and Parks to monitor the boat docks and shorelines.
