The Yankton County Commission voted this week to increase property taxes by ninety cents per thousand dollars of valuation.
It is part of the transportation reform package passed by this year’s legislature. Counties are allowed to levy those taxes and dedicate the money to road building and maintenance.
Commission Chairman Todd Woods says they don’t have many other options…
Woods says the property tax increase will help cover the funding gap…
Counties also have the option to increase the wheel tax. Woods says they are not looking at that right now…
The legislature raised gas taxes, and license and registration fees as part of the plan to put more money into state roads.
