Liquor licenses in South Dakota are allocated according to the population of towns, cities, and counties. After each ten-year census, those license numbers are adjusted.

Despite the City of Yankton growing over one thousand residents in the past ten years, City Manager Amy Leon says there may be a new package liquor license available…

Leon says they need to wait for the state to audit the census numbers….

Leon says the city commission will have the final decision…..

With the limits on liquor licenses, the cost of an existing one can range into hundreds of thousands of dollars.
