The Yankton City Commission approved a fourteen-million-dollar property tax opt out earlier this month to finance construction of a new aquatic center in Memorial Park. There are now reports of petitions being circulated to refer that issue to a public vote.
Mayor Nathan Johnson is concerned about the potential fall out from a referendum…

Johnson says it would be a major setback for the city if the opt out is rejected….

Johnson credits “Dive in Yankton” with creating a positive approach to building the aquatic center….

The deadline to submit petitions is October 30th. If the signatures are verified, the city commission would then set an election date.
