Yankton Hosts Coyotes, Jacks

 South Dakota and South Dakota State track teams competed in Yankton on Saturday.

 Junior Jeff O’Connell collected wins in the men’s long jump and the men’s 200-meters while sophomore distance runners Katie Wetzstein and Amber Eichkorn both tallied a win and a second-place finish at the USD Snowbird held at Williams Field.

O’Connell set the league’s best long jump mark of the season with a winning mark of 24 feet, 0¼ inches and also led a USD 1-2 finish in the 200 with a time 21.59 seconds (wind aided). Zach Rothering finished second in that race in 22.03. O’Connell also placed second in the 100 with a time of 10.98.

Wetzstein and Eichkorn highlighted USD’s women’s performances with Wetzstein leading the duo to a 1-2 finish in the 1,500 with a winning time of 4:38.19. Wetzstein edged Eichkorn by .11 seconds (4:38.30) in that race and added a second-place finish in the 800 in 2:18.33. Eichkorn would lead USD to a 1-2 finish in the 5,000, winning in 17:49.58 with Megan Hilson finishing second in 18:14.15.

Amy Paulzine posted three top-three finishes as she and the South Dakota State women’s track and field team competed at the USD Snowbird Saturday.  En route to her finishes,  Pauzline posted two personal-best throws and won the javelin.

Paulzine won the javelin throw with her distance of 139 feet, 4 inches. Also in the javelin throw, Erin Ellinger took second (105-6) and Becca Fischer placed fifth (97-7).

Paulzine set personal-best marks today in the hammer throw and the discus. In the hammer throw, Paulzine took second with her distance of 176-10 and in the discus throw she took third with her distance 157-4.

All-time at SDSU, Paulzine ranks first in the javelin throw, fourth in the discus throw and fifth in the hammer throw.
