The Yankton County Commission has set September 29th as the date for a special election. That was decided at a special meeting today.
Voters will be asked if a property tax increase passed by the commission last month should be allowed to stand. The tax, which would be ninety cents per thousand dollars of valuation, would raise about one point five million dollars per year for road maintenance.
Commission Chairman Todd Woods says if the tax is rejected, they will have to make more cuts.
Woods says the commission has worked through all the other funding possibilities.
Woods says they want to educate voters about the need for the tax increase.
Over seven hundred petitions signatures were turned into the county auditor seeking the referendum.
