The Yankton County Commission will have a new member in January, but won’t need an election to fill that seat.
Gary Swensen of Yankton filed petitions to run as an independent for the seat now held by Commissioner Donna Freng. She chose not to run, and with no other candidate filing, Swensen will be sworn in early next year.
Swensen says he has been interested for years, but now has the time to take the position….

Swensen says he wants to learn more before taking positions on many issues…..

Swensen says he knows the commission faces some expensive issues, but believes they can be fixed….

Incumbent republican Commissioner Don Kettering filed for the other open position on the commission.
