The Yankton County Commission, at a special meeting Friday, voted to increase property taxes forty-five cents per thousand, and to extend the five-dollar wheel tax up to twelve wheels on vehicles.
The commission has been looking for more money to keep up with road and bridge repairs.
Commission Chairman Todd Woods says the tax and fee increases are just a start….
Woods says the money will not go very far…..
Woods says the county has over two hundred sixty miles of asphalt roads to maintain.
A proposal to raise property taxes ninety cents per thousand last year was soundly defeated in a referendum.
Woods says if these increases are rejected by voters, there are no good alternatives….
A number of people questioned the commission on the road proposals before they voted.
