The Yankton County Commission has approved the formation of a rail authority. It would be a joint venture with the City of Yankton, and be the conduit for business development along rail lines.

It is unclear if the county is part of the Napa – Platte Rail Authority, which works with the rail line from Napa Junction west into Bon Homme and Charles Mix Counties.
