The World Trade Organization has ruled in favor of the U.S. in a dispute with Indonesia over its vague and complex import requirements for beef and beef products. U.S. Meat Export Federation Executive Committee member and South Dakota producer Wanda Blair says that’s a very positive and needed ruling.
She says it’s critical to weigh in with the WTO on trade concerns and U.S. trade officials worked long and hard to get the resolution to the dispute.
Blair says Indonesia is an important market for U.S. beef as last year, those exports totaled 10.7 million metric tons, worth $ 39.4 million making it the ninth largest export market. She says the next step is for U.S. trade officials to secure bilateral deals with Pacific Rim customers.
Exports to Indonesia over the first nine months of this year are 96 percent higher in volume than during the same period last year.
