Winter wheat harvest is underway in South Dakota and it’s the culmination of a disappointing year for producers. About 20-percent of the crop has been harvested so far and acreage is down in the state with widespread winterkill problems. Consulting Agronomist Clair Stymiest says on the remaining acres they’re seeing just average yields so far.
Stymiest, who works with growers in the central part of the state, also says the quality of the winter wheat crop has been a bit disappointing.
He says the spring wheat looks better than the winter wheat so he’s more optimistic about higher yields for that crop. He expects harvest to start in about a week.
