Winter Wheat Crop Rating Continues to be the Worst in 20 Years

Winter Wheat Crop Rating Continues to be the Worst in 20 Years

The U.S. winter wheat crop continues to have one of the worst condition ratings in 20 years at only 34-percent good to excellent. That is up one-percent on the week. However, in major production areas like Texas the state rating is only 16-percent good, with none of the crop in excellent condition. Ben Scholz farms in Texas and says it’s one of the worst crops he can remember due to the continued drought.

He says the irrigated winter wheat will make it, but those acres make up a small percentage of the total crop in Texas.

Scholz says many farmers in his state will be abandoning the poorest wheat fields.

He says the abandoned acres will likely be planted to cotton with the stronger prices recently for that crop.
