The timing of this week’s winter storm in the Northern Plains could not be worse for cattle producers who are in the middle of calving season. That’s according to SDSU Extension Veterinarian Dr. Russ Daly.
He says the main problem for calves is hypothermia, so providing wind breaks and shelter can help keep those animals dry.
Daly says another major concern when calving during a winter storm is protecting newborns against scours.
Daly says cool wet weather helps bacteria survive longer which increases the chance of calves getting scours or other diseases.
