Wind Storm Increases Concerns for Lodged and Downed Corn

Winds advisories are posted today for portions of the western corn belt, with wind gusts up to 45 miles per hour. Pioneer Agronomist Bob Liska covers northeast Nebraska and says the high winds yesterday and today increase the amount of lodging and downed corn, the good news it’s not accompanied by any moisture.

Liska says stalk rot has been reported in much of the western corn belt, in part due to the high yields but also some other stressors.

He advises farmers to check their corn and test to see if it needs to be moved up on the harvest schedule.

Liska says with the big corn crop and low corn prices farmers need to minimize harvest loss as much as possible. And even with more drying at least the cost will be less due to lower propane prices.
