Wind Development Dependent on Transmission Project

A short window of opportunity for wind power was one of the conclusions from the recent national convention of the American Wind Energy Association.

Steve Wegman with South Dakota Renewable Energy says the potential is there for more development under current policy until about 2017. He says a couple of major pipeline projects proposed to cross the state could also spur more wind energy.

Wegman says South Dakota has done a good job so far in developing wind power.

Wegman says further development is dependent on construction of the so called “Clean Line” transmission project across Iowa. He says there will be challenges in getting to that route.

A potential wind development for Lincoln and Unions Counties is under discussion, but facing opposition.
