Some farm group leaders are wondering if the passing of longtime Cuban leader Fidel Castro will lead to further loosening of trade restrictions between the U.S. and Cuba. U.S. farm groups, including the National Association of Wheat Growers, want to see the decades long embargo and other trade restrictions lifted. However, NAWG President Gordon Stoner says they’re still fighting a facet that is opposed to trade with Cuba.
He says there is great potential for U.S. wheat to be exported to Cuba.
Stoner says capitalism is making inroads in Cuba and hopefully that will help convince the new Congress and President to move ahead with loosening of trade restrictions.
Stoner says besides lifting the trade embargo, it would be helpful if financial obstructions were also eased to further enhance trade.
