Minnesota Wild assistant coach Darryl Sydor has returned to the team following a drunken driving incident this summer.
Sydor took the ice for practice Tuesday, his first this season with the Wild. He told reporters he’s thankful for the opportunity to coach again and that he won’t let his “huge mistake” define his identity. Sydor said he’s fought an alcohol addiction for “some time.”
Sydor was sentenced last month to 60 days in jail, to be served incrementally over four years. He was arrested in August, driving erratically as he took his 12-year-old son to a hockey tournament. His blood-alcohol level later tested at 0.30 percent, according to the criminal complaint.
Wild coach Mike Yeo said he’ll ease Sydor back into his responsibilities. He won’t travel with the team initially.
Minnesota Wild right wing Justin Fontaine has a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee that’s expected to keep him out four to six weeks.
The Wild announced Fontaine’s diagnosis on Tuesday. He was injured in the game on Friday against Chicago. Jordan Schroeder replaced Fontaine on the third line on Saturday against St. Louis, with Charlie Coyle and Thomas Vanek. Fontaine has one goal and three assists in eight games this season.
The Wild also revealed that rookie center Tyler Graovac had surgery on Tuesday for a bilateral core muscle repair in Philadelphia. Graovac will need about six weeks to recover. He’s played in just one game this season.
