The World Health Organization is clarifying a recent report from the International Agency for Research on Cancer that listed processed red meats as a carcinogen. They are now advising consumers to reduce their consumption of processed meat as a ways to reduce their risk of getting colorectal cancer. South Dakota Beef Industry Council Director of Consumer and Nutrition Education Holly Swee says beef and other red meat provide important nutrients in the diet.
Swee says eating any food in excess can cause problems. She says her group will continue to recommend consumers include red meat as part of a healthy diet when consumed in the proper amounts.
The WHO says early next year they’ll review the public health implications of the latest science and the place of processed meat and red meat within the context of an overall healthy diet.
