Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue met this week in Canada with their Minister of Agriculture and other high ranking Canadian officials. He says the discussed a possible framework for renegotiation of NAFTA. Perdue talked to them about the need to resolve both dairy and wheat issues. Steve Mercer with U.S. Wheat Associates says he’s glad the Secretary brought up the wheat grading issue because that’s a problem they’ve been working on for some time.
He says while the U.S. grower gets less for his wheat sold in Canada, the Canadians are able to get paid more for their wheat and that needs to be corrected.
Mercer says Canada needs to stand by the original agreement they made with the U.S. not to grade U.S. wheat lower than theirs.
Mercer says however if the wheat grading issue can be addressed in the remake of NAFTA his group supports that.
