Leaders of the U.S. Wheat Associates and National Association of Wheat Growers have sent a letter to Canada’s Ag and Trade leaders asking for improvements in that country’s treatment of U.S. wheat. Wheat Associate’s Public Policy Director Dalton Henry says U.S. wheat sold into Canada receives the lowest grade while Canadian wheat coming South gets the highest grade.
He says the U.S. wheat groups would rather work with Canada on a solution rather than taking a case to the WTO. He says they have had some success with Canada on a pair of minor barrier issues involving variety registrations and what varieties can be sold to Canada.
Henry says the U.S. groups told Canadian Ag Minister Gerry Ritz and International Trade Minister Ed Fast that solving this problem by equalizing wheat trade will strengthen the relationship between the U.S. and Canada.
