The National Association of Wheat Growers and U.S. Wheat Associates are pleased the European Union and the United States have agreed to a four-month suspension of tariffs. Those tariffs are related to the WTO aircraft disputes. NAWG Vice President of Policy and Communications Josh Tonsager says the E.U. tariffs have hurt U.S. hard red spring wheat exports and having at least a temporary suspension is helpful.
Dalton Henry, Vice President of Policy for U.S. Wheat Associates, says this aircraft dispute has been going on for some time and has completely stopped hard red spring wheat sales to the E.U. from the U.S.
Henry says while the four-month suspension doesn’t solve the whole problem it gives negotiators time to find a workable solution.
Henry says an important part of getting the entire dispute resolved is the confirmation of a new U.S. Trade Representative. President Biden’s nominee Katherine Tai (ty) was approved by the Senate Finance Committee and the confirmation will now be heard on the Senate floor.
