Wheat Groups Opposed Proposed Change in Food Aid Program

The National Association of Wheat Growers and U.S. Wheat Associates have come out in opposition to a plan to change the food aid program. Tennessee Senator Bob Corker is calling for a shift from mostly sending U.S. commodities overseas to a system of cash transfers. Past NAWG President Gordon Stoner who farms in Montana says both NAWG and Wheat Associates are totally against the idea.

He says whatever aid is sent abroad needs to come from America’s farmers because it not only benefits the countries it’s going to but also helps give the U.S. economy a boost.

Stoner says the food aid program has worked in the past and has good Congressional support.

Stoner says Senator Corker’s call to eliminate in-kind food aid donations in favor of all cash gifts is an extreme position shared by AEI, a group that regularly attacks farm programs and farmers.
