This year’s historically wet weather in the northern corn belt was a mixed bag for soybean cyst nematode control. That’s according to Greg Tylka, Iowa State University Extension Nematologist. He says the wet conditions and late planting slowed the spread of SCN this season.
However, he says one of the negatives is the wet soils and flooding can move SCN from field to field.
So, Tylka advises growers to run a soil test yet this fall to determine the level of SCN on their farm.
He says left unchecked soybean cyst nematode can cause substantial damage and yield loss in soybeans.
Tylka says there are hundreds of SCN resistance soybean varieties farmers can plant if they detect the pest. He says producers get more management advice on the SCN Coalition’s website.
