In the last few weeks, we have had weather conditions go from one extreme tothe other with spring-like days with temperatures in the 800’s and 90’s then back to winter-like conditions with temperatures in the 30’s and 40’s with some snow. Laura Edwards is the South Dakota climatologist based at SDSU. She offers a preview of what we may expect for the next month in terms of weather conditions.
Edwards says it remains wet in the northern portions of South Dakota and further north. She says the snow cover is melting and is re-charging the soil moisture levels.
The SDSU climatologist says the La Nina weather pattern is fading, and in its place will be the start of the El Nino weather pattern. She says with the change of weather patterns, the upcoming summer months may be cooler than normal.
Edwards says you can’t always know what will happen with an El Nino, as past weather patterns may not be indicative of current weather conditions.
