The House recently defeated a water and energy bill that contained funding lock and dam modernization and infrastructure upkeep. Waterways Council officials are hoping that measure can be revived. Council Senior Vice President Deb Calhoun says while they think it can be brought up again, it probably won’t happen until late this year as part of a larger appropriations measure.
She says the need for repair and modernization of locks and dams is growing as the U.S. system continues to age rapidly.
Calhoun says there is a large payback to the U.S. economy from funding infrastructure.
The original water and energy bill was killed largely because of a rider added related to LGBT bathroom rights. House GOP members are hoping to avoid that as they attempt to resurrect the legislation.
