At their Convention over the weekend Iowa Farmers Union members spent a lot of time discussing water quality issues and farm practices. State President Jana Linderman says they covered a lot of other priority issues as well including growing and advancing local food systems and increasing marketing opportunities for producers.
Linderman says their members had many questions about how the State Agriculture Department and other agencies can help farmers improve water quality.
She says the State’s lawmakers need to help provide farmers more resources to help them manage water quality challenges.
Linderman says their delegates also talked about the need to help farmers especially beginning producers diversify their operations. She says the idea of Ag Co existence was brought up so different types of farms could move forward whether its organic or traditional operations.
