Farmers took advantage of the nice weather on Saturday and tried to make up for lost time from earlier delayed planting. Outside of Sioux Falls, Tyler and Rod Erban were planting corn. Tyler says he didn’t get started planting as early as he would have wished, but he says the soil conditions have improved. Erban says soil temperatures have finally come up above 50 degrees, and he is hopeful the cool soil temperatures are behind us. Erban says a year ago was nearly perfect conditions as he was already finished with his planting of both corn and soybeans by early May. Erban believes he will finish with his corn planting sometime this week.
Jim Dick farms near Marion, and is already done with his corn and was planting soybeans. He says he was delayed with his planting compared to last year. Dick say he chose not to many any modifications to his planting rate and depth even though the top layer of soil was dry. Dick says following the rains from last week, planting and soil conditions are near ideal. Dick also believes he will wrap up his planting duties sometime this week.
