The war in Ukraine, acreage decisions and high input costs are top of mind with producers attending this year’s Commodity Classic in New Orleans. Iowa Soybean Association Director Brent Swart says the turmoil is having an impact on input prices, which were already at near or record levels.
He says the conflict in the Black Sea may also mean fewer global acres of major crops like corn and wheat, which will have an impact on cropping decisions and acreage in the U.S.
The high commodity prices have the grains in an all-out acreage battle, but high fertilizer prices and the shortages of some herbicides is also coming into play.
Swart says farmers will be looking for ways to cut costs in the new season without it coming at the expense of yield.
