Minnesota Congressman Tim Walz says he supported the recently passed legislation in the House that would establish a voluntary biotech labeling program. He says there is false labeling under the current system and a national standardized label would eliminate these marketing gimmicks.

Walz says he supports consumer choice, but also believes biotech crop have been thoroughly tested and there is no danger in consuming foods containing biotech ingredients.

The Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act would require USDA to develop a certification program similar to the one they already have in place for organic food. The bill will not come up for a vote in the Senate until this fall.
