Walmart Supports Biotech Safety

Some food industry leaders say consumers want biotech labels. Both Campbell Soup Company and Panera Bread officials say their customers are demanding labels. However, Walmart officials say the debate should not have been about labeling, but about the safety of biotech crops and relying on science as the guide. South Dakota Corn Growers President Keith Alverson says Walmart’s position is positive for agriculture.

He says it’s imperative for farmers to communicate with food industry groups and consumers about the safety of biotechnology.

Alverson says it’s also important that farmers and ranchers are transparent about the technologies they’re using and demonstrate that to consumers.

Alverson says Walmart officials are correct in always offering what the customer wants.
