Walmart officials says they will transition to cage-free eggs by 2025. HSUS Vice President of Farm Animal Protection Paul Shapiro says the majority of egg buyers have already made that determination. He says sourcing eggs from cage-free operations means a healthier product for consumers and provides better conditions for the animals.
Between 6 to 10-percent of hens across the country are raised without cages. Shapiro says the shift to cage-free housing will mean a more humane environment for the birds.
Shapiro says Walmart is a big player in the retail food industry. He says their decision to join others going cage-free will inevitably mean most if not all the eggs in the U.S. will come from this type of production.
Walmart sells more groceries than any other company in the country. The new guidelines will apply to the retailer’s more than 5,000 stores in the United States.
