Besides just counting heads, the US Census collects a wide range of information that state and local governments can use for research and planning.

Dave Mingo, Community Development Director for the City of Yankton, says they haven’t seen that extra data yet….

The Census does population estimates in between the ten-year count. Mingo says they don’t rely on those….

Mingo says they look at housing and other local indicators to see if the numbers match up….

The city and county had been growing in population about one percent per year since the 1970 census.
