The United States Cattlemen’s Association is supporting legislation proposed by Senators Debbie Stabenow and John Hoeven to make Country of Origin Labeling a voluntary program. The Senators are hoping that will head off any retaliation sought by Canada and Mexico over the labeling law. USCA President Danni Beer of Keldron, South Dakota says it remains to be seen how much retaliation will be allowed by the WTO.
Some Canadian officials have indicated only outright repeal of COOL will head off tariffs. Beer says if Canada holds to that, then our trade officials will likely challenge them on it.
Earlier the U.S. House passed a measure repealing Country of Origin Labeling., and the WTO is scheduled to issue an amount of retaliation damages on December 7.
