The U.S. is facing over a billion dollars in retaliatory tariffs from Canada and Mexico over Country of Origin Labeling which the WTO calls trade distorting. National Farmers Union President Roger Johnson says to come into compliance with the ruling, the Senate needs to pass the voluntary COOL measure.

He says the WTO did not have a problem with the portion of the COOL law that lets consumers know where their food comes from. Johnson says the part that needs to be brought into compliance involves whole cuts of beef and pork.

Johnson says even Canada itself has a voluntary labeling law so they and Mexico would be out of place challenging a U.S. version of that.

Johnson says Congress may try to do something with COOL when they put together the Omnibus budget bill. He doesn’t like that approach as there are no hearings allowing input with that.
