President Biden is concluding his talks with officials from Mexico and Canada this week. Much of the discussion is focused on trade issues. The National Corn Growers Association is praising Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack for taking a hard stand on the impasse regarding Mexico’s decree to end all imports of U-S corn containing GMO’s. It is estimated that more than 95 percent of all corn grown in the United States contains biotechnology traits, and Mexico has been the top buyer of U-S corn in recent years. Vilsack is encouraging quick action to resolve the issue. Secretary Vilsack indicated that there would be no compromise on Mexico’s proposal to ban biotech corn. National Corn Growers Association president, Tom Haag says “we would encourage the Biden Administration to keep this issue front and center and push for a quick resolution, as farmers have already made their purchasing decisions for the 2023 crop year. We also continue to urge the Biden Administration to file a dispute under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement.” Vilsack’s comments came as President Biden met with Mexico’s president, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
