On Monday the WTO declared the U.S. Country of Origin Meat Labeling law trade distorting. U.S. Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack says his agency has done all they can do to implement and defend the law. The ball is now in Congress’s court.
Vilsack says USDA will recommend the level of retaliation by Canada and Mexico be minimal, because he thinks the economic impact of the rule has also been minimal.
The Secretary says if Congress repeals mandatory COOL they could come back with a voluntary program.
This is the final appeal for the U.S. labeling law in the WTO.
