The Nebraska Unicameral’s override of the Governor’s Veto of the gas tax legislation is a win for the state’s farmers and ranchers. That’s according to State Farm Bureau Vice President of Government Relations Jay Rempe says the poor condition of the state’s bridges was enough of a reason to support the six cent a gallon gas tax hike over four years.
19 percent of Nebraska’s bridges are termed as either unsafe or in need of repair and Rempe says that is costly to farmers and ranchers.
Rempe says Nebraska isn’t the only state that has had to raise the gas tax to fund infrastructure. However, he says his group wants to work with Governor Ricketts to find long term solutions to road and bridge funding challenges.
The veto override vote was 30 to 16. Once fully implemented the tax increase is expected to raise $75 million a year.
