Nebraska State Senators have sent on to final reading a measure to raise the state’s gas tax six cents a gallon over four years to fund roads and bridges. The State Farm Bureau supports the measure, however the Governor is likely to veto the legislation. Nebraska Farm Bureau’s Vice President of Government Relations Jay Rempe says it’ll be a challenge to get enough votes to override the expected veto.
Rempe says if it’s approved the gas tax hike will be phased in over four years with equal allotments given to the various government agencies.
Rempe says without a raise in the gas tax to fund infrastructure, any other funding sources are limited.
Rempe says while the Governor has said he’d veto the gas tax increase, one of his main priorities is getting relief for property taxes so he’s unlikely to support increasing that to pay for roads and bridges.
