Researchers in Switzerland have developed a new oral vaccine used in Wild Boars they say has been effective in vaccinating against African Swine Fever. The findings have been published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science. National Pork Producers Council Chief Veterinarian Dr. Liz Wagstrom says she’s read about the vaccine and the jury is still out on its effectiveness.
She says having an oral vaccine for use against ASF would be good. Wagstrom says it will take time to get an ASF vaccine that will work in commercial hogs.
SDSU Extension Veterinarian Dr. Russ Daly says it’s likely the first time an oral vaccine has been developed and he also thinks it’ll take time to get a good vaccine out for ASF prevention.
He’s hoping they can come up with an ASF vaccine that can first be used in China to stop the diseases spread.
Both Wagstrom and Daly say America’s pork producers have done a great job with their biosecurity and encourage them to continue with those efforts.
