With Valentine’s Day just days away, the Better Business Bureau is warning online daters about the scams that could steal more than just your heart. Jessie Schmidt is the South Dakota state director for the BBB and says online dating scammers are becoming more popular as more people begin using the sites.
Schmidt says if the communication between you and your online partner is strictly online and through the phone, the relationship should be questioned right away.
She says that many scammers pose as military personnel or someone who is frequently working overseas in order to request travel money.
Schmidt warns against any online relationship that develops quickly and says any conversations that discuss money should be taken very cautiously. According to the Internet Crime Complaint Center, more than $80 million dollars was lost in 2013 to romantic scams.
