South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard announced he’s appointing William J. Shorma of Dakota Dunes to the vacant seat in the South Dakota State Senate representing District 16. That replaces the seat held by Senator Dan Lederman who resigned earlier this year. South Dakota Farmers Union President Doug Sombke says while he’s glad the new appointee has a good agricultural background thinks the whole process needs to change.
Sombke says there are a number of ways the process could be changed so the new legislator isn’t determined by an appointment of the Governor.
Shorma’s appointment is effective immediately and he will serve the remainder of Senator Lederman’s term which expires after the 2016 general election. District 16 includes all of Union County and southern and eastern portions of Lincoln County.
