House Democrats announced Tuesday they had reached a deal with the Trump Administration on the U.S. Mexico Canada deal. That will allow the House to vote on the trade pact as early as next week. Meanwhile, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell signaled a vote would not take place until after the impeachment proceedings in his chamber. American Soybean Association Director Kevin Scott says getting over this hurdle is a victory and one they’ve been working on in Washington the last few weeks.
He says USMCA is one of the most important trade agreements in history for U.S. agriculture, as both countries are top export customers.
Scott says the urgency the deal also lies in the fact that the U.S. continues to lose market share the longer the pact goes without being ratified.
The Mexican government made labor concessions the Democrats had asked for to reach the agreement. Tuesday senior officials from the U.S. and Canada traveled to Mexico City to sign the amended treaty.
