USDA To Cut SNAP Benefits

USDA To Cut SNAP Benefits

The United States Department of Agriculture has released a proposed rule that will eliminate broad based categorical eligibility for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance or SNAP program. House Ag Committee Chairman Collin Peterson of Minnesota says the rule will cut $2.5 billion annually from the program and kick 3 million people off SNAP. Minnesota Farmers Union President Gary Wertish says they’re disappointed with the proposal.

He’s also critical of USDA as their proposal attempts to override the SNAP law passed in the 2018 Farm Bill without Congressional authorization.

Wertish doesn’t think it’s right to eliminate those SNAP benefits for working families and hungry children who badly need the program.

House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal of Massachusetts says the Ag Department SNAP proposal will increase hunger and hardship for millions of Americans.
